The St. Vincent de Paul Society is volunteers, Catholic men and women who take

seriously the words of Jesus:

“You have my Father’s Blessing:

when I was hungry you gave me food

when I was thirsty you gave me drink

when I was a stranger you welcomed me

when I was naked. You clothed me

when I was ill, you came to my help

Whenever you do this…you do it to me.”

Our volunteers give freely of their time and our purpose is to assist the poor and needy in

Dorchester County. There are about 15 members who respond to calls for assistance which

comes through the Church or Social Service Agencies. What sets us apart from

other volunteer groups is that we go to the homes of those needing assistance in pairs to better

assess their needs and provide any help we can.

Our funds come from the poor box at Church, individual donations, and member contributions.

We also, have an annual fundraiser to help raise money.

You can be assured that 100% of all contributions to our mission are used to give comfort to the

poorest of the poor.

Please read our mission statement.

Thank you for visiting and if you are interested in volunteering our making a contribution please

call or e-mail. Blessing to you!!

St. Vincent de Paul Society

Meeting, March 10, 2010

Treasury:  $3331.32.

Reports:  Due to the time constraints, case reports were not read.  Joe asked if there were any particular calls that a member wished to discuss and none were offered.  Reports representing 63 calls were submitted.

Spaghetti dinner:

Event date:  April 16th

Clean kitchen and dishware:  April 9th, 8:30

Set up and sauce prep: April 14th, 9:00 AM

Suggestion was made that some members purchase tickets for Spanish-speaking parishioners who can’t afford them.  Margarita to dispense, perhaps for a nominal charge.

Nugent was requested to call Brendan Keegan and tell him about the dinner and solicit his participation.

Cecile reported that the ticket table will be moved inside the hall, from the hallway, because of the danger of robbery in the hallway.

Nugent suggested we adopt the Baltimore Archdiocese Catholic Charities practice of referring to “persons who have been made poor”, rather than “poor people”.  Takes the blame off the person and reflects the results of culture, economic conditions, and the “system” that makes poverty a permanent part of our society.  Directs attention to the need change the “system”, not the people.

Joe and George attended a diocesan-wide Sr. V de P meeting in Middletown.  The diocesan St. V de P together provided $1 million in food, utility assistance, rent and goods last year.

Only 25% of U.S. parishes have a St. V de P group.

Joe reported that there is a national St. V de P meeting in Pittsburgh this summer.  He opined that it would be good for our group to have someone attend. Estimated cost of the trip would be $400.00.  Suggestion was made that the “treasury” fund a trip.  John suggested that someone should go and that the members could fund the trip.  John volunteered $100 toward the cost.  Joe passed on the item until a future date if someone wants to go.

A decision was made to take the bed on the stage to a particular family in need.  Joe, Bill, Pat and Diane agreed to deliver it after the meeting.

Our pantry is low.  We need peanut butter, jelly, mac 'n cheese, pasta and sauces, soups(not broth), cereal, Meals in a box, green vegetables, carrots, corn, etc.   If everyone just brought one item per week, we'd be very well stocked.  So please raid your pantry to fill the parish pantry.  And thank you from St. Vincent de Paul Society."
